The traditional Developer → QA → Business handoff is becoming obsolete.
Here's what I'm seeing emerge in 2025:
80% of software builders will be "AI Engineers" - domain experts who can both develop AND test because they understand the business deeply. Think:
- Product managers prototyping features directly
- Business analysts building their own dashboards
- Customer success teams creating workflow automations
- Finance experts developing their reporting tools
20% will remain "Expert Developers" - handling complex architecture, security, performance optimization, and building the platforms that enable the other 80%.
Why this works:
✅ Domain experts understand real user scenarios and edge cases
✅ AI tools (Cursor, Replit, Lovable) are democratizing development
✅ Faster feedback loops when the same person builds and validates
✅ Better business logic because builders live in the domain daily
The result? Software that actually solves real problems, built by people who face those problems every day.
The big question: Are we training our teams for this shift, or are we still hiring like it's 2020?
What are you seeing in your organization? Are domain experts starting to build their own solutions?
